British Voice Over

British Character & Animation Voice Actor

Great animated characters need a voice that feels completely their own.

I’m James Brown, an award-winning British male voice actor recording animation, character voices, toys and interactive performances from my professional studio in Devon.

Character work is one of the parts of voice acting I enjoy most. Whether the brief calls for a believable everyday character, an eccentric comic creation, a villain or something much larger than life, the aim is always the same: make the character feel real.

Award-Winning Character Voice Actor

In 2026 I won the One Voice UK Award for Best Toy/Physical Game Performance.

Character work allows much more freedom than a straightforward narration or commercial read, but the performance still has to serve the story, audience and production.

Character Voices for Animation and Cartoons

I record voice performances for:

  • animated films and shorts
  • cartoons
  • web animation
  • children’s content
  • toys and physical games
  • educational characters
  • comedy characters
  • villains and antagonists
  • narrators and storytellers
  • branded animation
  • interactive content

Some characters need broad comedy or heightened energy. Others work best when the performance is restrained and believable.

I build the voice around the writing rather than simply creating an accent or funny sound for its own sake.

British Character Voices and Accents

My natural accent is contemporary RP, but I also perform a range of British character voices and regional flavours.

Depending on the brief, characters can be:

  • warm and friendly
  • comic
  • eccentric
  • sinister
  • pompous
  • authoritative
  • childish
  • elderly
  • energetic
  • understated
  • aristocratic
  • rougher and more grounded

I particularly enjoy characters with humour, flaws or a darker edge 🙂

Creating a Voice That Fits the Character

Character voice acting starts with understanding who the character is.

Before recording, I look at:

  • age
  • personality
  • background
  • relationships
  • emotional state
  • audience
  • scene context
  • physical characteristics
  • pace and energy

Concept art, character descriptions, previous recordings or visual references can all help establish the performance. For more story-led performance work, you can also hear my Narration Voiceover.

Consistency Across Episodes and Sessions

For recurring characters, consistency is important.

I can keep reference audio and performance notes where appropriate so that character tone, placement, pace and energy remain consistent across later recording sessions.

This is particularly useful for episodic animation, ongoing educational content or expanding toy and interactive projects.

Live Direction and Remote Recording

Live remote direction is available if you or your director, animator or production team would like to guide the performance during the session.

Character reads often benefit from collaboration, particularly when experimenting with different intentions, comic timing or emotional levels. You can read more about the setup on my My Studio page.

Professional Character Voice Recording

All recordings are produced in my professional treated studio in Devon.

I can provide:

  • clean broadcast-quality audio
  • WAV or MP3 delivery
  • individual character files where required
  • alternate takes
  • live remote direction
  • fast turnaround
  • consistent performance across follow-up sessions

Character and Animation Voiceover Rates

Rates depend on the size of the role, script length or recording time, intended use and project scope.

Longer-running characters, series work and larger productions are quoted according to the requirements of the project. See my Pricing page for more information.
